Prospective students

Our research lab is constantly looking for suitable candidates as graduate students, postdoctoral research fellows and visiting scholars. The availability of these positions depends on on-going research projects as well as availability of researchers already in the program. If you are interested, you should first read the following FAQs since they answered most questions you could have.

Please DO NOT send us e-mails unless you did read the FAQ page and you were convinced that you are highly qualified.

FAQ

1. Where is our lab?

Our lab is located in Amiens downtown 15 minutes by walk from the Amiens train station being at 75 minutes from Paris Gare du Nord and less than 2 hours from Paris Charles De Gaulle International Airport!

Mailing Address:

Dr. Gerard-Andre Capolino - Department of Electrical Engineering – LTI Lab - University of Picardie “Jules Verne” – 7, rue du Moulin Neuf – 80000 Amiens - France

Tel: (+33)669905370

E-mail: gerard.capolino@ieee.org

2. I sent you an e-mail, why didn't you respond?

Like many faculty, we use to get a lot of e-mails and requests on a daily basis. We do appreciate your time and interest in our research activities.

We try to satisfy your needs as much as we could but do remember that a single day only has 24 hours. If we will reply all the e-mails and accept all requests, we wouldn't be able to meet our daily duties in term of teaching, research and collective services.

3. Do you have any openings for graduate students?

We use to receive more than 20 applications every MONTH from many countries in the world. Honestly, most of them are highly qualified. However, because of limited number of positions, we only recruit a small number of students each year (usually in between the beginning of January up to the end of May).

Please do not e-mail us asking whether we do have any openings. To be our graduate students, one has to satisfy all the university requirements (language skills as well as academic equivalence named VAE in French). In addition, you should have a BSc or MSc degree in Electrical Engineering with major in “power” from a reputable university with a high GPA. Others should not apply since they will be automatically denied.

We do prefer students who demonstrate:

-Self motivation and absolutely dedicated to academic excellence ad willing explicitly to be the BEST!

-Background in electrical machines first with other skills in power electronics, power systems, instrumentation, data processing and computer simulation. But remember electrical machines FIRST!

-Previous research experience in the above areas (ie. journal publications, conference presentations and project involvements).

-Previous experience in teaching, research and industry training period(s).

-Hardware and software skills (MATLAB/Simulink or/and SCILAB, EMTP, LabView).

-Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral (TOEFL is mandatory).

5. Can I have a meeting with you and introduce myself?

After a couple of initial correspondences, we will arrange an interview with all prospective students if candidates did meet initial requirements. If not, it will be useless for both parties. The purpose of this individual interview (at least 1h of time) is to assess the applicants’ academic backgrounds as well as communication skills. Technical questions will be asked during this interview.

For overseas students, Skype or Zoom meetings could be arranged.

6. Will I receive financial support?

Currently all graduate students in France will receive financial support through various sources. The exact amount of funding depends on performances and it varies from student to student (the minimum being around 10 kEuros for one academic year including social and health insurance). It will be enough for you to get a student visa and to support an average student life. However, the exact level of financial support will depend on your research experience, academic accomplishment and the availability of funds. Some students receive sizeable extra research stipends in recognition of their outstanding academic performances.

Self-funded students with proofs of funding for a minimum of 3 years (foreign government/agency scholarship) are welcome.

7. How do I apply?

You should send us your full resume with a detailed list of publications, research/educational experience and sample publications, a few names of references who can comment on your research accomplishment and communication skills.

If we do find your background/records fits our current research activities, we will contact you for further details/interviews.

Do send only PDF files to the following address:

gerard.capolino@ieee.org

8. Could you arrange a visit of the LTI lab to learn about our ongoing research?

Thank you for your interest in visiting our research laboratory. For the moment, no virtual visit is available but it will come very soon.

9. Do you have any openings for undergraduate students?

No, since it is not up to a research lab to recruit undergraduate students. It should go through a general process led by the undergraduate study administration

May we recommend you to contact before January of the each academic year the Campus France facility in your respective country for the following year admission!

Please do understand that it is IMPOSSIBLE to overpass this procedure.

10. Could you write a reference letter for me?

We only send reference letters for students we do know and previously studying with us. However, it can be done for other students being in touch with us from visiting positions and from students recommended by faculty we did collaborate with.

If you are not in the previous cases, don’t ask since it will be denied for obvious reasons.
